The road race course had to be modified due to the
bridge on Church Hill Rd. being closed. Despite assurances
earlier this year that it would be finished in time,
the bridge construction is not done. This forced the
elimination of the most daunting climb of the course.
Not to worry! Our sadistic course planners have come
up with more fun for you to have. The climbing starts
less than a half mile from the start line on Harp Hill
Rd. It's short but sweet, but the descent afterward
will give you enough time to get into the small ring
for the sharp climb at the start of Woodland Way. This
road offers many scenic views that you won't have time
to look at until the cool down as you grind up one hill
only to encounter the white-knuckle descent on the other
side.
The descent levels slightly before a sharp right onto
Easterday, a narrow country road that winds up a false
flat through a tunnel of trees. You emerge onto the
buttery smooth pavement of Pleasant Walk and are immediately
faced with a short sharp climb. It's just a warm-up
for the 6 miles of climbing to follow on Loy Wolf. It's
important not to underestimate the amount of pain a
mere 2-4% grade can cause if it's long enough. This
road will cause many a rider to pop if they use up their
energies too soon.
Riders will get a short respite on Garfield before
encountering two short but very steep climbs that will
have many a racer searching for another gear. Once onto
Stottlemeyer,there are more stomach-raising descents
to rest the legs before the fun begins anew.
