Rides
Caution
Bike riding is inherently dangerous. Everyone crashes sooner or later. Crashes can lead to serious injury and even death. You ride these rides at your own risk.
The Sunday Ride
Depending on the route, the Sunday Ride is anywhere from about 45 to 50 miles in length. We meet at the
Java Shack in Arlington (2507 N. Franklin St., near the intersection of Barton and Wilson) at 8:30 am.
The ride goes up Rock Creek parkway to the Art Barn/ Pierce Mill in Rock Creek Park where DC and Maryland members often join in around 9:00am. The ride then heads up Beach Drive toward (but not all the way to) Viers Mill Park near Kensington, MD. This portion of the ride is usually social in nature with speeds kept around 18 mph. Single or double paceline is maintained depending on traffic.
The ride changes character once we turn onto Tuckerman Lane. A harder pace, sometimes with attacks is the norm during most of the year, although we try to keep this section mellow and steady in the winter. Upon reaching Falls Road we turn left, and then right onto Glen. From Glen the ride splits up into an A and B group, with the A group taking a longer and hillier back to Potomac, MD relative to the B group. Both groups end up on River Rd and take a right onto Falls Road to get to Great Falls Park where we descend into the park and climb back up the hill. We then head to MacArthur Blvd. and then onto Clara Barton Pkwy for the return to Georgetown (Please note: this section of the ride can be extremely fast—you should be in very good shape and have experience in pacelining to join the team on Clara Barton. There is often a slower group that goes back on MacArthur.) Eventually we end up back at the Java Shack in Arlington where we sip espresso and eat muffins - the best part of the ride!
The Friday Muffin Ride
Meet at the Java Shack at 6:30 am for a recovery pace loop (17mi) around Arlington. Finishing this ride is as much fun as doing it. Sit back - have a muffin, coffee and talk with teammates before heading off to work.
